The gorgeous Princess Romina front and center for the Ninja Senshi Tobikage article in the 1/1986 issue of Newtype.
Oh shit! Awesome OFFICIAL Black Lion character art in the 5/1992 issue of Newtype. This OVA is an adaptation of Go Nagai’s manga of the same name. Those mechanical designs are just oozing Ohata goodness. Hideyuki Motohashi was the character designer and animation director. Look him up, his anime rap sheet is ridiculous! I have never seen actual art work from this bad ass OVA. What a real treat!
Newtype Express article on a somewhat obscure OVA. Daimaju Gekito Hagane no Oni (Demon of Steel: Battle of the Great Demon Beasts) in the 12/1987 issue of Newtype.
Demon of Steel is an AIC production that has some well known names to make an 80’s anime fan happy. Directed by Toshihiro Hirano, character design by Naoyuki Onda, animation directors Hirotoshi Sano (I love this dude), Masami Obari and Onda. With mech designs by Ohata you would think this OVA was every fanboys dream. The fact is the OVA is slow and has pacing problems BUT its animation is fucking beautiful! Track this down online and give it a shot.
Those mecha designs look crazy right?
THIS video is how I found out about this OVA. Subscribe to the channel he has A LOT more- [AMV] Demon Of Steel w/ Vicious Rumors - Digital Dictator - YouTube
Haja Taisei Dangaioh (Dangaioh- Hyper Combat Unit) you fill my heart with such Emotion. This is an ad for the video release of the 2nd part of the OVA series and a small reminder for Akira release also in the 11/1988 issue of Newtype.
I adore this OVA series so much. Director and character designer of the OVA is our friend Toshihiro Hirano. Not only was he the character designer he also did the mech design with Koichi Ohata, Masami Obari, Shoji Kawamori and Yasushi Ishizu. Mind blown yet? The whole staff of this OVA is outrageous. Just look through who was involved Dangaioh (OAV) - Anime News Network
Akai Hayate video release ad in the February 1992 issue of Newtype. Production by Studio Pierrot and distributed by Pony Canyon there are also three other titles on the bottom of the ad. Kotobuki Goro Show, Yumemakura Baku Twilight Gekijo and the Go Nagai classic The Abashiri Family. All of these OVA titles were released as an experimental concept from Studio Pierrot’s video magazine show named Anime V Comic Rentaman. They never repeated the experiment and later released all of the titles separately.
I remember when CPM released this on VHS. I have read nothing but bad reviews but I still want to see it. You cant go wrong with armor designs by Koichi Ohata right?
